Mastering the Art of Music Promotion

Mastering the Art of Music Promotion

You’ve just finished recording your latest release. It’s now available on all major streaming platforms, yet your audience is nearly nonexistent. What can you do? In today’s digital age, music promotion has become as crucial as creating great music itself. As an artist, I’ve learned that promoting your music effectively is a journey filled with creativity, strategy, and dedication. In this guide, I’ll share my insights and strategies on how to master the art of music promotion.

Section 1: Building Your Brand

Creating a strong brand identity is the foundation of successful music promotion. Start by defining your unique sound and crafting a memorable image that sets you apart from the crowd.

One of the first steps in building your brand is to understand your musical style and influences. Finding artists or bands that sound similar to you can help you define your niche and target audience. Here are some valuable websites and tools to assist you in this process:

1.1 Discover Artists Similar to Your Sound

Music Streaming Services: Platforms like Spotify and Apple Music often recommend similar artists when you search for a specific artist or song. Explore these recommendations to discover artists who share similarities with your music.

Music Discovery Websites: Websites like Last.fm and TasteDive provide personalized music recommendations based on your musical preferences. Enter your favorite artists or songs, and these platforms will suggest similar music you might resonate with.

Analyze Your Music with AI Tools

Use AI-driven music analysis tools like SoundGrail or Musiio. These tools can analyze your tracks and provide insights into your music’s style, tempo, and mood. They can then suggest artists whose music aligns with yours.

1.3 Attend Local Gigs and Open Mic Nights

Engaging with your local music scene can help you connect with artists who share your sound. Attend gigs, open mic nights, and local music festivals to network and discover like-minded musicians.

Section 2: Utilizing Social Media (X - Twitter)

Harness the power of social media by choosing the right platforms, creating engaging content, and maintaining consistency in your online presence. Remember, content is king, and storytelling is your secret weapon.

2.1 Choose the Right Platforms

Social media platforms play a pivotal role in music promotion, and one platform that has emerged as a game-changer is X (formerly known as Twitter). With its real-time updates and vast user base, X is an ideal place to connect with your audience.

2.2 Content is King on X (Twitter)

On X, brevity is key, with a 280-character limit per tweet. Here are content ideas to engage your audience:

Teasers and Previews: Share short snippets of your upcoming music releases or music videos. Create anticipation by revealing a catchy line of lyrics or a brief instrumental preview.

Behind-the-Scenes: Offer a glimpse into your creative process. Share photos or videos of you in the studio, practicing, or writing lyrics. Humanize your brand and connect with fans on a personal level.

Interactive Polls and Questions: Engage your followers with polls or questions related to your music or upcoming projects. Ask for their opinions on album artwork, song titles, or even tour locations.

Share Influences: Mention other artists who inspire you. This not only gives your followers insights into your music tastes but can also attract fans of those artists to your profile.

Promote Collaborations: When working with other artists, promote your collaborations on X. Tag your collaborators to expand your reach to their followers.

2.3 Consistency and Engagement on X (Twitter)

Building a loyal following on X requires consistent interaction and engagement:

Respond to Comments and Mentions: Engage with your audience by responding to comments and mentions. Show appreciation for their support, answer questions, and create a sense of community.

Retweet and Share User-Generated Content: Encourage fans to create content related to your music and share it on X. Retweet or quote tweet their posts to acknowledge their dedication.

Use Hashtags: Utilize relevant hashtags to increase your tweets’ discoverability. Research trending hashtags related to music and incorporate them into your posts.

Announce Live Q&A Sessions: Host live Q&A sessions where fans can ask you questions in real-time. This fosters a direct connection and builds excitement around your music.

Transitioning Followers from X (Twitter) to Other Platforms

While X can be a powerful tool for engaging your audience, it’s essential to use it as a stepping stone to transition followers to other platforms where you can deepen the connection. Here’s how:

Promote Other Platforms: Regularly mention and link to your profiles on streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube. Encourage your X followers to follow you there for exclusive content or early releases.

Run X Contests and Giveaways: Host contests or giveaways on X where participation requires following you on other platforms. Reward your followers on X with exclusive content or merchandise when they engage with you on other platforms.

Tease Exclusive Content: Occasionally, share exclusive content on your other platforms and promote it on X. Let your X followers know that they can access something special if they follow you elsewhere.

Engage Cross-Promotion: Collaborate with fellow artists or influencers who have a strong presence on other platforms. Cross-promotion can introduce your music to a new audience on those platforms.

Remember that transitioning followers takes time, patience, and consistent effort. Building a strong presence on multiple platforms ensures that you can connect with your audience wherever they prefer to engage with your music.

Stay tuned for my upcoming posts where I’ll delve deeper into collaboration, streaming platforms, fan engagement, live performances, and data analytics, all essential aspects of mastering the art of music promotion. Surviving Depression

Surviving Depression

Depression is very real, and, if you’re going through it, you know just how important being repeatedly reminded of your value can help. Even if you don’t ever go with your friends, you want to be wanted, because it lets you know people are thinking about you, though you need time alone.

[doubting your ability to clearly explain it all, you say you’re just tired]

You want your loved ones to get past the awkwardness of asking what’s wrong so you can tell them, but your words barely make sense to you. So, doubting your ability to clearly explain it all, you say you’re just tired, and you really are.

[…but this all-encompassing cloud hangs over you]

You’ve dealt with so many thoughts about how you could feel better; for you to be out of pain, truly experiencing the professed love of your family and friends, and the sense of being important instead of just hearing it. That would tire anyone out, but this all-encompassing cloud hangs over you.

Eventually it dissipates, and you don’t know how. You think about what you went through, but you can’t quite put your finger on what changed. You appreciate the little things again, like when someone holds a door for you or waves you on in traffic.

Though you want to figure it out for next time, because their is always a next time, you don’t want to look back on it for fear your thoughts might take you there again.

So you live with this hidden shadow, waiting to come back, and there, perched in the back of your mind it bides its time. It knows—No, you know it will be back, and maybe it never really goes anywhere. Maybe that’s why you’re sitting in your mind, pondering your self-worth based on your contributions to a group of people you love, while you go through your everyday routine, waving a smile and cheering up others.

[…that was the solution last time]

Maybe you convince yourself the smile you’re selling is real. Maybe that was the solution last time. You didn’t want to remember it before. Did the cloud ever stop raining? Did you find your thistles to chew on in the Thousand-Acre Woods?

You don’t know. Perhaps you weren’t actually depressed because you convinced yourself it was real, the smiles and cheer, and maybe that makes this time worse.

[This is your normal]

It is never about any time. This is living with depression, and you’re strong despite being exhausted. While you’ve considered giving up, something always brings you out of it. This is your normal.

Maybe that something is someone who isn’t in your life or treating you how you want, triggering your cloud to come out and play. That can be devastating. Find someone to talk to. Get past the awkward words, and get help. You’re worth it. You aren’t alone, and people know what you’re going through. Our circumstances may be different, but I too survive my depression. Make sure you keep surviving with me.

A Dance Floor filled with the Sounds of Blood...

The lights dim, and the crowd murmurs as he takes the stage. The familiar house beat—four on the floor, accented with snare and hi-hats, comes in, driven by the familiar bass that sets the tone and mood of his brand of post-apocalyptic, horror house, that begins the rhythm and buzz on the dance floor, driving the crowd to dance. Smiles and cheers go round the floor as fans shuffle and groove to the beat, mesmerized by the otherworldly tones.

Neck and back pain are a regular for me, stemming from a car accident and my military service. This seems common place for most people, and I let my pain keep me from living life to its fullest for the last four years.

I recently completed physical therapy to help with the pain and mobility issues. The strengthening helped my mobility, but nothing stops my nerve pain.

I also saw a nutritionist to help me combat my weight gain. Anyone dealing with limited mobility can relate. My weight slowly increased 40 pounds, and I needed to do something about it.

We set up a plan, reducing my soda intake while increasing my water intake. Now, three weeks later, I’ve lost nine pounds, and I rarely drink a whole can of soda. I drink between 120 to 160 ounces of water every day, and I feel better.

My wife decided it was time to get me new sandals, my most worn shoe, and, with my focus on feeling better and improving my quality of life, I thought better shoes might help me feel a little better. I was wrong. It made me feel a lot better.

I am wearing a new pair of Finn Comfort sandals: German made, hand sewn, Italian leather sandals with removable insoles and the ability to be resoled. I love the feel and understand what I previously would have considered a ridiculous price. These are the Mercedes Benz of sandals, and they are worth every penny of the $200+ price tag. This experience prompted me to share my realization with you.

I grew up not wanting for much. Part of this is because my parents set my expectations early on. We had what we needed, and my parents went out their way to get us special things when they could.

The most important thing my parents spent on us was their time. We had a good life, and it was because my sisters and I knew we were loved. There wasn’t a price tag on my parents’ time for their kids. This is something I try to emulate with my daughters. My five daughters and my wife are the most important people in my universe.

I don’t want any regrets when I leave this world. I want my time, the most precious commodity I have to offer, to be comfortable. Yes, I deal with pain, but I won’t let it control me. My comfort is worth the fiscal price I pay because it affords me the priceless, quality time with my family.

My footwear choices are no longer solely based on functionality and acceptable levels of reducing discomfort. My priority is now is comfort so I can enjoy every special moment with my family. I challenge you to do the same.

Treat your body right, feel good, and enjoy your time with the ones you love. The memories you form with those loved ones are priceless. To think, I learned all this buying a pair of sandals. I can’t wait until I need new sneakers.

DownSide Up to Release Exclusively on Gareth Emery’s Choon

But what is Choon?

Choon is a possible solution to the music industry’s upside-down revenue distribution. You might not be aware there is a problem with how revenue is distributed in the music industry.

Here’s the Problem

The music industry has
faced numerous changes over the years as technology has improved. Gone are the
days of stores filled with vinyl albums and cassette tapes. CDs came and have
slowly fallen by the wayside, giving way to digital downloads, but even downloads
are becoming a thing of the past. The new way forward appears to be streaming
music. Whether it be Spotify, Pandora, AppleMusic, or SoundCloud, listeners get
what they want, music, whenever they want it, but this comes at a cost to
musicians.

Copyright laws and royalty rates are slow to change, and despite market and technology changes, streaming services are legally required to pay 10.5 percent of revenue to master recording rights holders (think record labels and sometimes artists).

Let’s break this down to simple math. The Copyright Royalty Board has set a cost of living adjustment to the rates paid to master recording copyright holders for 2018, with the rate increasing on basis point each to $0.0018 for ad-supported, non-subscription music streaming services; and $0.0023 per performance for paid subscription services. Previously, the rates had been $0.0017 and $0.0022, respectively.

So… let’s say you’re a Spotify premium member, and you stream my single Eyes Are Here on Spotify. You would have to stream the song five times before I make my first penny ($0.0115). At that rate, Eyes Are Here needs to be streamed just about 435 times before it earns its first dollar, almost 4,350 times before earning $10.00 and so on. Fortunately, I completely own my rights; otherwise, I would only receive a percentage of that revenue with the label and publisher receiving the larger share.

Here’s the Solution

Imagine trying to earn a living based on streaming revenue. It is not feasible, and that is where dance DJ and producer Gareth Emery looks to make a change with Choon. Choon is a cryptocurrency-based music platform that simplifies the revenue stream for artists and simultaneously encourages listener-artist interaction. This sounds like a win-win situation.

Choon is opening its beta testing sometime during April 2018, and it seems promising. This seems like a great way to change the music industry, and I see this as an investment in my music that allows me to engage with my fans while cutting out the middle man.

Downside Up, my upcoming dance single, will release exclusively on Choon. I have chatted with Gareth and other artists involved in the beta testing and early adopting in the platform, and the energy and enthusiasm from each of them is exciting. I am excited for all this could mean for artists and fans alike.

What do you think about Choon? Let me know in the comments below, and remember to look for Downside Up and new collaborations by Rez Vidal on Choon.

Funny Memes I Found, December 9, 2017

In my routine quest to stave off boredom, I searched the inter webs (if that’s how people are saying it now, I think it’s funny ?) to find materials I deemed funny enough to share, so I could write an obscenely long runon sentence, all the while fighting my OCD tendencies, urging me to correct this English teacher’s nightmare of a sentence, which is actually oddly enjoyable despite the off putting way it should feel— perhaps a self admission of being slightly sadistic, coupled with an unhealthy dose of masochism, since I’m kind of enjoying my attempt to endure this exercise in a screwed-up attempt at communication. The messed up thing is I didn’t lose track of what I was saying. I did, however, realize I was rambling. My search for humor turned up these memes, and I put them together in a video for you. I hope you like them, and share them with your friends. Cheers.

Making Strides… A Decision and the One

One… After pouring out my heart and making myself vulnerable… My post got great impressions, lots of likes and positive feedback, a few reposts, AND one person downloaded my track for free?!?!?! Awesome!

That is one more person who did not have my music in their collection before.

That’s one more person who can witness that I shared my craft with the world.

That’s one more person that can listen to what I felt while creating that one track.

They can share in my journey and my growth, and that’s one more person I’ve reached. Thank you.

Every effort has a Genesis, a beginning, an origin story. We can trace that story back as far as the ancestors we know, but that’s not how you got here, reading my blog about this one person.

My effort to transition to full time music began about five years ago, give or take a month. I finished a master’s degree for my then current profession. This followed seven years of active duty military service in the U.S Army, followed by one in the Florida National Guard.

I decided to do something for me. I knew I had the education and proficiency to support my family, and I previously gave up several opportunities in music because I needed to provide a steady, stable environment for my kids. I decided to go back to school to learn the technical and business sides of music.

I attended Full Sail University. I learned a lot, and I made some great friends. I would normally go into the factors that made my education beneficial, but I would be losing focus on the task at hand. Look at the beginning of the last paragraph. That is my Genesis story. “I decided to do something for me.”

That deciding point puts the rest into perspective. Five years ago, I decided to:

Pursue my passion professionally;

Develop my talent so I can effectively communicate through my passion;

Demonstrate to my children you can accomplish that to which you set your mind.

My original goal was to transition to full time music by the end of 2017. I had to make adjustments. The beauty of setting goals is the chance to adjust them as life happens. It is about the pursuit of happiness, not the pursuit of starvation and destitution. I was in an accident that left me unable to work for over a year. That was a setback, but it allowed me time to adjust my goals and strategy.

Fast forward five years, and I am telling you that one person who downloaded my track for free is a stride in the right direction. This is the beginning of the transition. You can be the second person, and your friends can be the third. I’m not worried. I’m excited because I’m making progress, and you’re helping me by sharing my journey. Thank you, whether you are that first or the thousandth person to download my free track. We will keep moving forward, and I’m glad to have you with me. Cheers!

It’s Thanksgiving in the United States, and with that comes a day to spend with those you love and cherish, followed by eating turkey until your heart’s content. That is where the Avarice (greed) begins.

Soon after the turkey has settled, Black Friday begins. It’s okay to be greedy if you’ve got the “go-ahead,” and here is your chance to listen free and enjoy some greed with my new track, Avarice. Please enjoy, like, and share. Happy holidays to you and yours. Cheers!!!

Music Is My Method of Communication, Not The Message

I’m often asked how I come up with my music, the melodies, harmonies, and ideas for my different songs and instrumentals. Those who are familiar with my work flow know I create at least a track every day. For those who didn’t know this about me, now you do. I don’t say this to brag. I say this to explain my mindset in creating music.

Music is my method of communication, not the message.

Think about that for a minute. The message is what I feel and want to share with my fans. I could write words and try to express what I feel, but the texture is not there. Music, especially dance music, is meant to be tactile, in my opinion. I don’t want to listen to a song that has no movement or grit to it, and so I make music that moves and lets listeners feel what I felt while creating it.

Sometimes my songs convey the feeling of awe, as if I’m looking at life through a new set of eyes. Other times, I want my listeners to groove out while melodic lines express the darkness I feel when I deal with my PTSD.

The fact that I am here making music is proof that communication is the key when I’m dealing with different issues, especially PTSD.

https://soundcloud.com/rezvidal/rez-vidal-time-stops

Sometimes words can’t clearly express what I feel. That’s why many of my tracks are instrumental. Sometimes I feel multiple emotions, and I incorporate lyrics that express one concept while building on a separate mood created by the music.

Listen for what the songwriter, composer, or artist felt while creating their song. You might learn something. You may also find your own interpretation to the song, giving it personal meaning.

Have a great day! Cheers.

An Artist Stays Busy, Always Working on Something

It’s been a while since I wrote you all, side effects of the all consuming life. We wake up, work, and try to spend time with our loved ones, while attempting to squeeze in a little creative time. That’s the life of a part-time, dedicated artist, a full time dad, and full time husband.

So— “What’s new,” you ask? I released another album, “Bump In The Night,” on September 22. This is house music with texture. Some people call it Tech House, but it feels psychedelic. The transitions themselves dance, flowing into each other, as the harmonies move to create space for the melody; meanwhile, the melody builds, as filters scan and scroll the frequencies, so your ears may drink something new as the kick drum drives you on.

https://soundcloud.com/rezvidal/sets/bump-in-the-night

That sounds psychedelic to me.
I’m in my jeep, riding with my family to pick up the rest of our daughters, and I realized I have a lot for which to be thankful. Sometimes it’s just that I woke up on this side of the ground. Sometimes it’s awesome feedback about my music from my fans. Most of the time it’s how my wife and daughters love me. Even though that love is powerful, I sometimes take it all for granted, not because I’m selfish or because I doubt it, but because I deal with depression and PTSD.

I’ve been dealing with some challenges while working on my new release. We all deal with people and situations that try to derail your plans from time to time, but depression and PTSD can intensify the effects those negative people and situations bring.

The difficulty becomes working past and through the days, weeks, and months where nothing seems as bright as you remember. Those afflicted by depression and/or PTSD often lose confidence because our self esteem goes to shit.

The sun might be shining, but a rain cloud seems to follow you wherever you go. Your emotions are in a constant state of flux, and that’s the point where you give zero fucks, so long as things get better.

I was in that place recently. Hell — if I’m being honest, I’m crawling out of that place right now. I realized the negativity I’ve been experiencing is real, after enduring months of mental anguish and torment, second guessing my value because of other people’s god complexes.

Despite the nonsense I’ve experienced, I’m here, emerging on the other side. The clouds are dissipating for now, and that’s a good thing. For those of you who have been there for me, thank you. I know you’re true friends. For those of you who weren’t, I don’t hold grudges. I understand what it’s like to be preoccupied with life. I hope you get through things quicker than I do when you’re at a low point.

I’m not sharing this because life is all sunshine and smiley faces with unicorns shitting rainbows while leprechauns abandon pots of gold to pull me out of my depression. I say this because one or more of you need to know you’re not alone. Maybe there’s a rainbow shitting unicorn waiting for you. Now, if you find him, you tell that fucker I’m not a leprechaun, and I will kick the shit out of him and his friends for my pot of gold. I hope I helped you smile.

Mastery Journal - July 2017

Ladies and gentleman, this is the last mastery journal I will post. I say that because my degree program is nearing its end. I graduate August 4, and I am excited. Thank you for joining me on this journey.

My final class was Public Relations: Final Project and Thesis. The class sounded like it was going to be simple. I figured I would compile the final results of my capstone project and put together my thesis. I was right, but there were some key lessons that helped me add something extra to my website. These lessons focused on web optimization and ease of use. This was reminiscent of my first bachelor degree (Technical Writing), but the application was practical and immediately useful.

One of the assignments required me to edit my website based on best practices and usability. I adjusted my fonts and topic placements. I adjusted the color scheme, and I was inspired to compose a new music track: Dark Nebula (Space Vampires), because of the movies I watched when I first studied basic web design.

The class was an overall success. I am much more confident about public relations than I was before the program. I can put together a social media marketing plan better than I previously could have imagined. My new knowledge even allowed me to network while at the Tampa Bay Comic Con. This was exciting because I found a like-minded musician who is trying to build awareness for local artists in Pasco County, FLA.

I am also encouraged by some of the outstanding work and design my classmates implemented in their projects and assignments. The hands-on approach to learning the material was excellent. The program is not perfect, but it beats a strictly traditional classroom setting.

I can without a doubt call myself a public relations professional. My work speaks for itself. I worked with multiple real clients throughout my program because others saw the results and growth for my primary client. I consider myself fortunate and blessed to have the guidance from my professors and mentors. I am blessed beyond words for the support of my wife and five daughters. I am grateful for this opportunity to develop my PR skills and portfolio.

Make sure to follow my blog. I will update you on what is going on in the entertainment industry and provide tips about public relations. Sign up for my newsletter, and I will update you with new music releases and upcoming events.

Thank you for following me throughout this journey, and may the real journey begin now. Cheers.

Mastery Journal - June 2017

My class this month was Online Media Room. I did not
know what to expect in this course. I expected I would perhaps learn to run an
online news service for my client; however, I was greatly mistaken.

This month’s course focused on compiling information and
resources for the press. I studied different companies’ media rooms to
determine what practices were acceptable to customers. There was more
information to process than I realized, and I was shocked to find many
profitable companies were not as good at providing centralized information as I
expected.

Additionally, this month I compiled the information I put
together for my client. I created a campaign snapshot video, built a proper online
media room, and created a social media report. The information became instantly
apparent to my client. He was already impressed by the results of my campaign,
and he was amazed at how much work and research went into the campaign once he
saw the media room. While the details have not been finalized, he wants to permanently
bring me on with the organization.

The most exciting part of this month was seeing my client exceed
his goals. My client exceeded his goal by 133%. This is exciting for any
business, especially for a DJ and event planning service. Exposure becomes
viral in the DJ world. Demonstrating success leads to people posting pictures
of the events. That leads to other DJs and vendors wanting to work with my
client, and this process allowed my customer to open a club. I am excited
because I was part of this experience. I helped make this happen, and it is a
sense of accomplishment.

I also contributed to my classmates’ success stories through
our discussion forums. I am excited to see my peers’ talents. I learned
something more about my process each time I critiqued a peer. I figure it is
important to take every opportunity to improve. I am excited for my last class
and graduation. This journey is getting ready to begin, and I am excited to see
what I can do as I become more proficient in this process. The public relations
world needs to be ready for a publicist with a new perspective, and they better
be ready.

Mastery Journal - May 2017

This
month’s course was Reputation Management Strategies. The course met and
exceeded my expectations when looking back at my original goals. I wanted to:

1) Identify
potential risks to my client’s reputation;

2) Plan
ways to mitigate those risks; and

3) Create
a plan to handle potential situations that could damage my client’s reputation.

I
did all these things and more.

I
did not realize the planning that goes into reputation management prior to this
class. I understood the importance of not making inflammatory statements and
keeping up with proper social etiquette; however, I feel somewhat remiss by not
formulating a template or crisis strategy prior to this class. This is
important.

A
story will be told any time a notable event happens. Will your company shape
the narrative, or will your company react to the narrative? Crises befall many
companies, and the way companies respond often dictates the public’s perception
of that company. This can determine whether a company’s reputation recovers
from a crisis or not.

I
developed a detailed plan for a crisis communication team to help ensure my
client can respond effectively to any potentially detrimental media situation
he faces. I assigned roles, outlined training, and provided a crisis communication
template for the team. I am confident my client can successfully handle a
crisis if he follows my detailed plan.

I
was originally unimpressed with the materials until I looked at the practical
applications of the crisis communication plan. I identified historical and
current situations where companies and artists did not have plans in place to
handle crises. One of these situations was a missed opportunity by a record
label to turn something as horrific as a terror attack into a method to enhance
the artist’s reputation while benefitting the victims and their families.

I
messaged Ariana Grande on Twitter, suggesting she have her PR personnel setup
some sort of benefit for the victims of the Manchester Bombing. Not only did
they not do something to benefit the victims and their families, but Ariana
Grande cancelled her tour. I do not understand the logic behind this, but I
know I vaguely remember bad press about Ariana Grande in a restaurant. Positive
efforts to help those affected by this terror attack would have overshadowed
the negative press from her restaurant incident from a year or two ago.

This
class has helped shape how I look at crises, and I am glad to know how to
minimize potential negative impacts while helping my client and future clients.

Mastery Journal - April 2017

This month’s studies
were incredibly useful, relevant, and timely for ongoing activities with my
client and other aspects of my business. Event planning is essential in the
public relations world. Knowing how to design an event to meet your clients’
needs and specifically target their audiences is a difficult task if you do not
know what you are looking for. These skills are an art form, tempered in
research. They can be time consuming; however, success can be rewarding. Here
is a for instance.

My client, VntiDope, has been playing different
shows and venues. He took a break from his residency to work on events and
festivals. During the course of his planning, VntiDope put me in contact with a
DJ working to put on a festival on May 6. They asked my advice regarding the festival and how to coordinate it,
as neither of them have significant experience with planning large scale
events. Within minutes, I showed them this month’s proposal from class,
explained the importance of areas to focus on, and was fully integrated into
working and playing in the festival. I have since written a press release for
the event, created promotional materials, and earned the respect of over 20 DJs
playing the festival. This also afforded me significant networking
opportunities.

The exciting part is that other DJs and promoters are
noticing my work on the PR side of the house. That offers a service few DJs can
provide. While it may not get me steady PR firm placement, this does allow me
to do independent contract work for the industry. I was also offered a DJ residency based on people who have heard me play through this process.

The discipline required in the entertainment industry is
more substantial than most aspiring artists realize. For musicians, the image
must be presented in as professional matter as the sound. This month has
further helped me promote the professional image my client and I need to be successful
in our symbiotic endeavors.

Be sure to check out my website. Check out my new posts, and
be sure to download some music on me.

Cheers, and thanks for reading. Please remember to share.

Revenue in Music: What Income Are You Missing?

The Revenue in Music Webinar, presented by Ruben Rosario (aka Rez Vidal), is to help independent musicians become aware of some of the income sources many indie artists overlook. These include the following:

Music Sales (Physical vs. Digital)

Performance (Booking)

Merchandise (Event vs. Website)

Royalties

Licensing

Technology is working in support of independent artists being able to rely on their art as a fulltime source of income; however, they have to be smart about it. This webinar explains the sources of income that can make a difference between a musician quitting or realizing their full potential in the entertainment industry. Additionally, Ruben provides integration tips and contact information for companies to help independent artists plan and act on capturing revenue they are missing by not knowing.

Revenue Streams in Music

Where is Your Music Career Going?

Independent musicians and DJs face several challenges as they create and release their music. The music market is oversaturated due to the ease with which people can post music online. This creates extraneous noise for would be fans to sift through, and for this and many other reasons I want to help you.

My name is Ruben Rosario. I am a Producer/DJ/Publicist who has been involved in the music industry since 1997. I compose music for films and dance clubs, alike. I have been through the different changes in the music industry, and I want to share my experience and knowledge with you because I wish someone helped me.

We have all seen the transition from physical record sales (CDs) give way to downloads, but now digital download sales continue to decline due to streaming platforms. The royalty rates for independent artists are minimal, especially since most independent record labels do not have the leverage or resources to negotiate higher payouts like major labels can.
Major record labels can be more selective with potential artists based on funding and exposure, often leveraging this against potential recruits. This often results in new artists surrendering their creative rights and rights to some or all additional income streams, like merchandise and clothing lines.

Look at Electronic Dance Music.
Electronic Dance Music (EDM) shows consistent growth in online activities. EDM is the fifth most popular streaming genre with 54% of all EDM sales coming from streaming. Physical record sales fell in 2015; however, EDM streams increased by 33%, from 11 billion to 15 billion streams. Top DJs grew their SoundCloud followers by an average of over 35% from May 2015 to May 2016. The Electronic Music industry was worth $7.1 billion in May 2016, a 60% growth from 2013.
Graphic credit: StatistaCharts

What does this Mean?
As an independent musician, you must find ways to capitalize on income streams through your music and performances. Mastery Journal - March 2017

Media Relations was an
interesting class. While I expected to be more involved with the creative
process, I did not realize how significantly dependent upon my client my
results for this class could be based. This provided a significant challenge,
but I am pleased with the overall results.

In addition to being a
student, I am a father of five beautiful daughters, I work a full time job, and
I produce music and DJ. My primary client for school is a DJ. His schedule
varies drastically from mine, and, based on his schedule, we were unable to
meet until the last minute.

This provided substantial
challenges since the editing process was extensive. While I am happy with the
results, I am not happy with the overall commitment I am seeing during these
developmental phases of our campaign together. I am sure things will turn
around; however, this leaves me a little concerned.

The take away is to
develop contingency plans that can meet the necessary obligations. In a real
world scenario, the client would assume the risk by not being punctual. In this
situation, it affects my grade.

The class was exceptional.
It met my expectations, and I learned a lot of the crucial pieces for the press
kit and methods of representing my client. I dare say it exceeded my
expectations. I hope things improve with my client’s availability, but only
time will tell.

I encountered different
and additional difficulties with uploading my work to YouTube based on
technical requirements. That was difficult because all of my work has fit
before. YouTube requires some videos to be under 15 minutes. That is alarming
while you are working on an assignment. I plan to find an alternate solution
for future classes.

Thank you for reading.
Cheers!

Mastery Journal - February 2017

Market and Consumer Research Analysis truly lived up to its
name and my expectations. I currently perform research and analysis during my
regular employment, but the research required for public relations is a
different kind of “beast,” if I can be as bold to call it such.

What is this beast?

Public relations and marketing require predictive analysis
to determine customer activities and responses. This is typical of most forms
of analysis in business. The main difference I find is the significance of a
like and share vice the unending tirades resulting from political decisions, as
viewed through social media. Many indicators are subtle, but this is dependent
upon scope of impact. There is a direct correlation between perceived impact
and emotional investment.

Wait… you said “perceived impact,” didn’t you?

I did. You are correct. The media is full of bias because it
is a means to sell additional programming and commercial slots. Sensational
news captivates audiences, and political leaders sometimes get caught following
false stories. The perceived impact is how a person believes something will impact
themselves or someone they know. The true impact could be, and likely is,
completely different than the standing belief, but that deals with the
interpretation of the consumers watching, reading, or listening to the news.
That leaves room for a lot of ambiguity.

What does any of this have to do with Market and Consumer
Research Analysis?

Market and Consumer Research Analysis is part of an art
form. The research is only a third of the story. Deciphering and coding results
represents another third, but the true art is in figuring how to craft a story
that is ethical which will manipulate the consumer to your whim. That is an art
form.

Huh?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Think about it. You put together a puzzle, and then you
redraw and recut all the lines in a new way if you do your job successfully.
Marrying science and art is a challenge, but the rewards can be substantial if
you learn to ask the right questions. I believe I have better insight for
current and future projects. Time will tell.

What do you think of Market and Consumer Research
Analysis being both science and art? Leave me a comment. Also, signup for
my newsletter, and I will keep you updated on my new posts, music releases, and
interviews. Cheers.

Unseen Scars: A Stranger Tried to Kill Him

by Ruben Rosario, 31 January 2017

“Am I going to die,”
were not the words 19-year-old Joe Williams thought when he woke up on December
19, 2009.

He woke up, went to
the gym, showered, shaved, brushed his teeth, ate breakfast, and started his
day, like he did every other day, but that day would prove to be different.

A deafening
explosion, accompanied by the world spinning, smoke all around him, sharp pain,
ringing in his head, and as he lingered on the edge of unconsciousness came the
screaming.

“I was in a giant
cloud of dust and smoke. My throat burned, like I was trying to breathe in fire.
I felt pain in my mouth and tasted blood. I smelled diesel fuel, and then I was
out,” he said. “I woke up for a few seconds, and I wasn’t in control of my
body. I remember screaming uncontrollably. I tried to tell my body to stop, but
I couldn’t stop screaming. My buddy eventually calmed me down, and when I could
talk. I just started apologizing. I thought it was my fault.”

Over 30,000
Americans die in automobile accidents in the United States each year according
to the National Highway Traffic Administration, but Joe wasn’t in an accident.
Joe wasn’t even in the U.S.

Joe was in Kandahar,
Afghanistan, a soldier in the U.S. Army. Insurgents targeted his vehicle with a
250 lb., deep-buried, command-wire improvised explosive device (IED). The
insurgent waited until Joe’s vehicle, a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP)
vehicle passed over the IED, and then he triggered the device, intending to
kill Joe and his friends with an explosion full of molten metal, liquefied by
the heat of the blast.

Joe and his buddies
were fortunate. They did not die that day. Their physical wounds would heal,
but Joe was left forever changed. While you cannot tell the ordeal Joe survived
by looking at him, eight years later, he still bares the emotional and mental
scars of the day a stranger tried to kill him.

Joe now stays away
from crowds. Unexpected loud noises can cause him to panic. He remains
hyper-vigilante, always looking for a threat, worrying that another stranger is
waiting to kill him, and can you blame him? How would you feel knowing a
stranger tried to kill you?

Joe often feels
isolated, but he is getting help. He receives treatment for his Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD) through the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Additionally, Joe is participating in a study conducted by the Chronic Effects
of Neurotrauma Consortium. He wants to help others who live with PTSD.

You can help people
suffering from PTSD.

“Be there for them.
Listen to them, and treat us as normal,” Joe says. “We are people, too, and we
want the same as anyone else. We’ve just been through different things.”

Contact the National Center for PTSD at (802)
296-6300 for information on how you can help. You can find them online at ptsd.va.gov.

Help those like Joe who live in pain, facing the constant reminders of
their ordeals, not because you support their cause. Help them because, in Joe’s
words, “we’re human, like you.”

Leave a comment below if you suffer from PTSD or know someone who does.

About the author:

Ruben Rosario is a PTSD survivor. January 2017: Social Media Metrics and ROI; Was it Worth It?

Social Media Metrics and ROI more than met my expectations
for improving my PR and marketing abilities. I had a fundamental understanding
of the importance of tracking metrics in marketing and PR campaigns, but I
thought the process would be substantially more difficult. Let me clarify. That
does not mean everything was easy.

It is so easy, even a ______ can do it.

If you chose “Caveman” for your answer, you are wrong, and
that is okay. I often found myself scratching my head, attempting to measure
results for embedded sources that offer different challenges for setting goals
and tracking conversions. I searched through a multitude of sources online to
find ways to track embedded SoundCloud plays versus native plays on my website,
and I found an almost complete answer in a blog
post by Simo Ahava. I say almost because Google has made updates since Simo wrote his post. That’s not his fault. Simo went in depth into Google’s Tag Manager,
explaining custom code and the code’s functionality. It took a while to grasp,
but I finally got it. It is a worthwhile read.

What is the benefit of this metrics stuff?

So—let’s say you write a marketing proposal for Company A,
and it gets approved. The owner provides you a budget, and he expects results. He
may not be tech savvy, but he understands dollars and cents. How are you going
to show him results? That’s right—metrics.

Won’t the results speak for themselves?

The results don’t always speak for themselves. Perhaps
Company A released a flawed product, and sales went down as a result of you not
knowing how to listen to what is being said on social media or review the
metrics. It might damage the company’s reputation, and it will likely cost you
your job.

Some risks can be avoided?

Instead, by incorporating metrics and listening, you
determine there is a problem, notify the owner, and he expands your budget to
handle customer feedback, engagement and suggestions. While sales may go down,
the damage can be mitigated, and the company can survive what could be a PR
disaster.

It was worth the work.

While I may not be an expert at making custom code for
measuring analytics, I can effectively use the metrics to help establish and
refine goals, measure the progress of my strategies, and make adjustments as
necessary. Yes, it (the reward of gaining the knowledge and practical
application of learning to effectively use metrics) was worth it, and I plan to
keep refining my skills in this discipline.

What do you think?

Let me know how you use metrics and Google Analytics in your
business? What resources have you found helpful?

Cheers!

RezVidal.com

Random Thoughts and Realizations

“What were you thinking?”

That’s a question I ask myself at least two or three times a week (more like everyday). Often, it leaves me with an optimistic, forward facing smile while embracing my efforts as a father of five beautiful daughters, three energetic dogs, a musician and public relations professional.

I think about my accomplishments, professional and academic, and I realize they pale in comparison to my greatest accomplishments, my five beautiful daughters. They are my legacy, but they are more.

My daughters are mine to mold and shape for only a short time. Then they go off into the world on their own, calling to check on their old man, every so often. They will make their own decisions, start their own families, work their own jobs (fingers crossed) and shape their own futures. I’m elated my girls will be successful, but the realization of our limited time together saddens me.

I don’t worry my daughters didn’t feel loved. I tell them at random, throughout the day. I hug them and talk to them. I listen to what they have to say, even if it’s about Minecraft, Twilight, or the newest Rick Riordan book. I listen as the recount their moments, happy and sad, knowing these moments, as fleeting as they are, help shape my daughters into the women they will become.

I am sad because I’m selfish and protective. I am sad because one day I will no longer be the love of their lives, and I fear I will be obsolete.

It’s in those moments I think, “What were you thinking?”

I then realize I’ll be there to help them with my experiences as a parent, listening to them and providing insight as needed. I will likely have grand children to love, spoil and return to their parents. I laugh at those thoughts, wondering why I was ever sad in the first place. It’s in those moments I realize I will always be relevant as long as I listen and respond in a meaningful way.

The text message above is a message I sent to each of my daughters, individually, because it’s true. I wrote that message after one of those contemplative moments because it is important for our children to know their own worth.

I will continue making music, releasing albums, working with clients and pursuing my professional goals, but my children are my greatest accomplishments. They should always know that, and I will strive to make it clear to them.

Take the time to let your loved ones know how special they are. Spend the time you have with them. Love them. The world will keep moving without you, but you will help create a better world for your children just by spending time with them and listening.

Share this with someone you know could benefit from this. I learned the significance of Pinterest and about the desktop counterparts to scheduling tools I previously used. I wrote an app review and learned how to track website traffic using google analytics. I learned to look at trends differently, and I am building a larger following on my social networks. While this met and exceeded my original expectations, I am, however, left with a few reflections to improve my progress.

I need to gain some clarification as to the requirements for this blog versus my website. I am not sure if I should continue developing my website or just continue using this blog promote and release content. Perhaps I should just make the website into a press kit, eliminating all extraneous material. I realize I need to change my hosting and platform with either decision. Wix is an excellent platform, but it limits my ability to manipulate my content using Dreamweaver. I am also unable to use Google Analytics within the Wix platform This is a serious limitation.

Tumblr is an easy enough platform for simple posts, but I feel restricted by the blog platform. I am seeking an all-inclusive solution, but that is what this process and class are about. Yes, I learned about the different tools and how to readily use them, but I have to decide my next step. That’s scary because of the time and energy I already invested in presenting my content, but I know I can do better.

So I ask you, my readers, what do you think the best web hosting platform is best for designing a Public Relations website that focuses primarily on the entertainment industry? I want to use Dreamweaver. FTP uploads are a necessity. Integration with Google Analytics is essential. I like the types of tools and apps Wix has for displaying galleries, and similar tools would be a bonus. Share your thoughts with me, and I will keep you updated on my progress.

As always, thank you for reading. Check back for regular updates. Cheers!

How a Mobile App Can Reduce the Educational Gap

The educational gap within the United States is growing, and
a solution needs to be found if the U.S. is going to maintain relevance outside
of military superiority. According to a 2015 study by
the National Center for Education Statistics, the United States is falling
behind, ranking lower than half (36 of 69) of nations studied in mathematics. This
is a significant problem, but perhaps it is just a symptom of a greater
problem.

Research shows exposure to and
instruction in music in different levels of education (preschool, primary,
university) yielded an increase in spatial learning and mathematical comprehension,
but music and fine arts programs have been cut or diminished in many educational
districts throughout the United States in favor of technology-based resources or
athletic programs. These same technological advances provide challenges to
educators trying to re-capture students’ attention as social media is
constantly available through smartphones. Approximately 74 percent of teens in
the United States, ages 12 to 17, say they access the internet on cell phones,
tablets and other mobile devices according to a 2013
report on teens and technology, but could the technological challenges
educators face be the solution?

Smartphones can and should be leveraged to incorporate music
and spatial learning into education. The National
Association for Music Education is always looking for ways to incorporate
music into and enhance the education of America’s youth. Visit them, and give
them your support, even if you only spread the word. The United States can
still recover the educational foundation that helped make it great. Music
blended with technology and gaming, with your help, could be the key to solving
the educational gap, capturing students’ attention, and diminishing the digital
divide in America’s classrooms.

Resources

Brown, L. L. (n.d.). The Benefits of Music Education.

Mastery Journal Update: November 2016

This month’s class, Legal Aspects of Media, was a journey
through important legal concepts to understand in public relations, journalism
and marketing. I was surprised by the simplicity of the concepts. Granted, the premise
of these concepts could cause one to question why people work so hard to
exploit loopholes in the system based on the inherent moral dilemma involved
with taking advantage of people and situations, but the laws are fairly clear.
They are in place for protect people from those who do try to take advantage of
people and situations. There are ways to correct many of these issues if you
accidently violate some of the regulations. These methods are even outlined in
the law.

It is difficult to determine which topic was most
beneficial. Learning about the Freedom of Information Act, defamation and
deceptive claims were interesting. I regularly deal with copyright and
licensing works in the music industry, but the intrusion case study was truly beneficial.
I foresee myself conducting a fair number of interviews, and understanding the
laws surrounding interviews is necessary to avoid litigation.

My favorite assignment was the publication. This allowed me to
further develop my portfolio and use it for a real world project. I pick my
topics based on my current work outside school, and improving my techniques allows
me to help my current film and music clients.

I am confident I can research legal issues pertaining to
most situations I could face in PR. I want to avoid litigation and maintain a
good reputation. I believe this course has helped me prepare for both those
goals.

This class more than met my expectations. I am better
prepared to avoid legal and ethical pitfalls than before taking the class. I
improved my writing by better learning the publication requirements, and I
thought of additional ways to improve while providing feedback to my peers.
Reading the law is not my idea of fun, but understanding the concepts and safeguarding
my reputation are important to me. This class helped me with that.

Mastery Journal Update: October 2016

This month has come and gone, leaving little time for reflection, but here it is. Stories in public relations are malleable, lumps of clay, begging to be shaped. Some of the sculpting is round, while other features are sharp. There can be a defined structure in vague language so long as it delivers the intended message. Identifying the audience and importance of a story is essential to writing every story. Without an audience, a story becomes nothing more than a diary (or journal, if you are sensitive to that sort of thing).

The point is, I learned to frame my writing in a way that will help others see the perspective I am trying to convey. Clear writing is necessary, and I will continue to develop my writing skills. This class provided that insight, and I learned what I expected. I look forward to learning about the legal aspects of public relations and writing for media. This will likely address some of the ethical dilemmas I may face in my career. I look forward to this. Until my next update, cheers!

Mastery Journey Update - September 2016

The all-encompassing “we” that makes up the internet can be thought of as a sea of random, faceless consumers; never eating or sleeping unless the message you send them is to eat or sleep. They hang off every word you write, waiting for your next moment of profound inspiration, of which they are increasingly jealous because you are a genius. You are magical, rarely crying—tears made of rainbows, pots of gold and generous leprechauns included.

Then again, you could be that prolific writer, in your own mind, who has a gift for most things musical and polysyllabic—loving to write about your experiences and grammar-be-d— maybe that’s too far.

The point is simple. Don’t be either of those people. Those aren’t the marks of an excellent public relations (PR) professional. They do not exist because none of that exists.

PR professionals must find a way to connect to their audiences; otherwise, they may be full of ideas no one is paying attention to, hearing, reading, or giving a first thought to, much less a second. The idea that someone could take your proverbial baby, one you slaved to birth, nurture, and nourish, and click “like” without taking a second to “share” their joy in seeing it with their friends or taking a moment to “comment” how wonderful your progeny, and you by extension, is, can be heartbreaking, but whose fault is that? It is your fault.

Perhaps you brought your baby to a library or a funeral. That goes over as well as any “________ in church” comment. It doesn’t.
Worse yet, maybe your baby is ugly. No one wants to tell you your idea is horrible. This is possible, but you need to realize not every kid has a face for the media. Your kid might be one of those kids.

Here are the takeaways:

1. Realistically identify your audience.

2. Set realistic goals for your message or idea.

3. Identify the appropriate times and places for your message.

4. Do not be afraid to make changes to your message or idea.

Those may be graphic descriptions, but the mission is a success if your audience connects. Cheers!

Analyzing PR Principles

The purpose of
public relations is to communicate and relate to people. There are messages and marketing
opportunities available, but there is a science behind this communication and
art form. This science can be outlined
through six different principles of influence.
Different psychological studies have shown the effectiveness of the
science, and we will look at how Volkswagen implemented some of these
techniques into its marketing.

The Six Principles of Influence

Dr. Robert
Cialdini outlined six principles of persuasion or influence. This is part of the science behind public
relations and marketing. The six
principles include reciprocation, social proof, commitment and consistency,
liking, authority, and scarcity, and each principle appeals to a need within
the person. Effectively relating to your audience increases engagement,
participation, and conversion rates in business (Robert Cialdini - The 6
Principles of Influence 2011).

Reciprocation can
be easily understood as returning the favor.
A free trial or sample can create a sense of indebtedness to buy the
product or service; however, social proof focuses on the effects of group
behavior and influence. This can be
simplified by looking at consumer interactions.
A consumer who has multiple friends with a certain brand of shoe is
likely to buy that same brand of shoe.
These are types of conformity that draw on social appropriateness and a
sense of belonging.

Commitment and
consistency focuses on a consumer’s values.
People do not like to back out of deals, and they like to be
acknowledged for their commitment.
Praising someone for his past decisions and encouraging him towards
continuing the trend can work tremendously in customer retention, but liking
(showing similarities to previous decisions, having similar names, being
attractive, or being similar to the customer) can influence customers to change
products or decisions. Researching a
customer’s preferences and previous decisions can impact success in influence
because these topics focus on a customer’s likeliness to maintain his status
quo and avoid change.

Authority is an
ingrained principal from birth.
Consumers, as infants, looked for guidance from their parents or
caretakers when they did not know what to do.
This was further supported in education, asking teachers for assistance
and clarification. The onus was put on
the authority figure for decision-making purposes. This differs from scarcity because the
supplier, or authoritative figure, is not giving a recommendation or instruction. The authoritative figure provides a limit in
availability. This increases the
product’s demand since the supply is limited.
Both these principles deal with someone who has a perceived control over
the customer in relation to their behavior or product availability.

Principles in Action: Volkswagen

Volkswagen uses
each of the six principles of influence on its website. Offering customers cash incentives
demonstrates reciprocity. Providing results from known consumer guides like Car
and Driver lends credibility through social proof. Volkswagen has a “Find A Match” tab that
allows potential customers to find a car that meets the customer’s personalized
needs. This is a strong implementation
of liking. Providing safety accolades
strengthens Volkswagen’s marketing using the authority principal, and they
include advertisements focusing on limited time availability to create a sense
of scarcity, encouraging customers to buy now rather than later. The implementation is smooth and appears
natural, and the layout is attractive, suggesting a pleasant experience.

Volkswagen, in its
Polo Dad Television Advertisement, uses a strong example of the liking
principle. The target audience is likely
small families. Volkswagen shows various
events, highlighting the importance of family.
These events show a girl growing up and the things her father does for
her as she grows. The commercial ends
with the grateful daughter receiving a Volkswagen from her parents as she
leaves home (VW Polo Dad TV Advert 2012).
These are common life events Volkswagen emphasized to relate to its
target audience because ideal families go through these different changes, and,
in its estimation, the ideal family owns a Volkswagen.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow’s Hierarchy
of Needs identifies five different needs common to each person’s
wellbeing. These fall into the
categories of comfort, safety, belonging, self-esteem, and fulfillment (An
introduction to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs - Abraham Maslow 2011). These five needs are motivational forces that
drive each person, and drawing a correlation equating a product with meeting
one or more of these needs can be highly effective in marketing and public
relations.

In
its Beetle High Five Commercial, Volkswagen drew a correlation between owning a
Volkswagen Beetle and to both belonging and self-esteem. Throughout the commercial the Volkswagen
owner received high fives from everyone he encountered, including a dog,
acknowledging and praising the driver for owning a Beetle. This made the owner smile throughout the
commercial, demonstrating a positive experience. This was designed to have potential customers
consider the Beetle for a complete feeling instead of the vehicle’s merits. The company focused on the consumers’
emotional and social needs rather than safety, affordability, or convenience.

Asch Conformity Experiment

The Asch
Conformity Experiment demonstrated individuals’ tendencies to follow their
peers against their own assertions.
Subjects knowingly agreed with incorrect answers for various reasons
because the crowd answered incorrectly (Asch Conformity Experiment 2007). Understanding this principle can play a
significant role in public relations and marketing.

Consider,
once again, the Beetle High Five Commercial.
As previously noted, customers were targeted based on acceptance appeal. Customers want to go along with the accepted
practice of owning a Beetle. Even if
this is the wrong decision based on safety, affordability, or any other
criteria, customers want to follow the crowd.

Persuasion versus Influence

Persuasion
and influence are closely related, being two parts of the same principal. Persuasion is the method people use to
influence change. One does not have the
power to cause others to act against his will, but he can use persuasion to
influence or affect a customer’s decision.
Persuasion is a method, used in everything from marketing to everyday
conversation, but influence is the desired affect.

Volkswagen’s
marketing campaigns leverages social proof or acceptance to influence potential
customers. As previously discussed, the
website addresses all six principals of influence, but Volkswagen invested
significantly in advertisements that build on social acceptance and conformity (Find
the perfect VW with the Find a Match tool.).
The company’s research into their target audience likely projected
positive responses to the commercials.
My own reaction was positive to each of the commercials (Volkswagen-Darth
Vader 2011 Super Bowl Commercial 2011).

Volkswagen could
improve its marketing efforts by making minor changes on their website. The website could use cookies to identify
ethnicity and household size to better market to visitors. This would allow imagery that potential
customers could better relate with. Larger
vehicles could be displayed for those with bigger families. Customers of different ethnicities could see
people who look like them. This could be
more affective than Volkswagen’s current efforts, but implementation may not be
easily achieved.

Conclusion

Volkswagen did its
market research. The company uses the
psychology part of public relations and communication to reach potential
customers. I have no interest in
Volkswagen vehicles, but I have positive feelings about the company after
watching their advertisements.
Volkswagen does not meet my family’s needs, but they have me considering
a vehicle for my daughters when they are of age. Overall, I think Volkswagen achieved its
desired results, influence over a potential customer, and that is worth Volkswagen’s
investment.

References

2012 Beetle High Five Volkswagen Commercial.
